“Know the pelvis like your sock drawer on a dark night at midnight and you’ll know what birth position will make room in the pelvis."
— Gail Tully
What is Spinning Babies®?
Spinning Babies® is an approach for ease and comfort in pregnancy and childbirth.
When we understand that fetal positions are not random, we realize that babies fit into the space available. Yet, thinking of the size of the baby or the pelvis is not enough. Birth anatomy can be flexible. Both the uterus and the pelvis have more available room when the muscles and other soft tissues are balanced. And that is what the Spinning Babies® approach is all about!
With Spinning Babies®, we begin to notice the ways our bodies behave, where there is tightness and tension, and where there is room to expand. We learn very simple techniques that help awaken and relax the fascia, the spiderweb-like tissue that runs throughout the body, between all of your muscles and organs, and that weave through the pregnant belly. We lovingly lengthen and soften the muscles and ligaments that connect to the pelvis. This creates space for the baby to wriggle and mould into the best birth position that they possibly can.
When you discover that strength in birth is not about force, but about softness, THAT is where your power will be!
Let’s create space together!

This group class is taught by Bethany Griffin-Shetler and Becky Gilliam, experienced doulas, childbirth educators, and Spinning Babies® Certified Parent Educators.
This is not a traditional birth class, but a very specific hands-on, whole body approach to preparing for labor. During this class, we teach you some very easy-to-do at-home daily activities that can help lengthen and soften the ligaments and muscles that attach to the pelvis. By practicing these daily during pregnancy, the baby is able to find more room to move into an optimal birthing position. At the same time, more comfort is found in the pregnant body, especially in those last weeks and months when your baby is getting so big and your belly is making daily life even more challenging! Issues like sciatica, back pain, tightness, and soreness are often decreased by those who use these techniques daily.
We’ll also prepare you and your support person to notice how your body works in labor and how your baby moves through the pelvis in order to get born. When labor stalls or is going on a long time, when the baby is not in a great position for birth, when there is a lot of back pain or pain in one area of the body, etc., these can be “invitations to act,” which means there are specific techniques we can use — even during labor! — to continue to help the body soften and lengthen and to help your baby find that space in the pelvis!
Class size is limited to ensure your instructors are able to work with each person individually and to help partners learn to support these techniques with confidence, both during pregnancy and in labor. Practicing Spinning Babies® during pregnancy can become a wonderful and simple way to help your partner connect with you, your pregnancy, and your baby. And it certainly helps you connect with yourself. At the end of it all, it’s about love.

We will meet in the privacy and comfort of your own home to learn about the incredibly powerful pregnant body! As we do that, we’ll learn simple ways to lengthen and soften the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus, pelvis, and the rest of the pregnant body. This lengthening and softening creates space inside the pelvis for your baby to navigate the birth process with ease and comfort for both of you!
But these techniques are not just about labor and birth. They are also designed to create comfort during pregnancy and to help alleviate some common pregnancy discomforts, such as sciatica pain, back pain, tightness, and pressure throughout the body.
We’ll also learn about Belly Mapping, a beautiful opportunity to begin to interact with your baby through the womb and begin to understand how they move and where they like to hang out, which not only encourages bonding but also provides some really valuable insight into where tightness or imbalance in the parent’s body might be — let’s address those places through Spinning Babies® techniques!
I bring all materials to your door and even leave you with a few fun items to continue using on your own everyday throughout pregnancy and maybe even after delivery!
